Here are 6 Types of MAPD Plans:

  • Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans: In most HMO plans, you generally need to use doctors, hospitals, and other providers in the plan's network, except for emergency care, urgent care, and certain other situations.

  • Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans: PPO plans usually give you more flexibility. You typically pay less when you use in-network providers and more when you receive care outside the network.

  • Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans: PFFS plans may allow you to receive care from any Medicare-approved provider that accepts the plan's terms and conditions of payment. The plan determines how much it will pay and what you may owe for covered services.

  • Special Needs Plans (SNPs): SNPs are designed for people with specific health or financial needs, such as those who have both Medicare and Medicaid, live in certain institutions, or have qualifying chronic conditions.

  • HMO Point-of-Service (HMO-POS) plans: HMO-POS plans are HMO plans that may allow you to receive certain services outside the plan's network, usually at a higher cost.

  • Medical Savings Account (MSA) plans: MSA plans combine a high-deductible Medicare Advantage plan with a special savings account. Medicare deposits money into the account that you can use toward eligible health care expenses. MSA plans do not include Medicare prescription drug coverage, so you may need to enroll in a separate Part D plan if you want drug coverage.
